St Francis of Assisi (1181- 1226) started this order of monks and insisted on a vow of complete poverty. A building such as this would have been frowned upon in the 1200s. By 1389 things had relaxed and by the time the 4th Earl of Desmond built this Friary in Askeaton it was quite a splendid building as the order had become wealthy and powerful.
